Couples Counseling
Reconnect, communicate, and strengthen your relationship.
Every relationship faces challenges at times. When communication becomes difficult or conflicts feel stuck, couples therapy can provide a supportive space to slow down, understand one another more deeply, and develop healthier ways of relating.
Research suggests that many couples wait several years after problems begin before seeking support. If you’re feeling disconnected, stuck in repeating arguments, or unsure how to move forward together, therapy can help create new patterns of understanding and connection.
At Inner Expansions Therapy Services, we work with couples to help them move beyond painful cycles and build stronger, more resilient relationships.
Is Couples Therapy Right for Us?
Couples often reach out when they find themselves asking questions like:
- Why do we keep having the same argument over and over again?
- How do we rebuild trust after hurt or betrayal?
- Why does it feel like we’re no longer on the same team?
Couples counseling can help partners better understand these patterns and develop healthier ways of communicating and resolving conflict.
Common Reasons Couples Seek Therapy
Couples therapy may be helpful if you are experiencing:
- Frequent arguments or communication breakdowns
- Feeling emotionally distant or disconnected
- Difficulty rebuilding trust after betrayal or hurt
- Stress related to life transitions or major changes
- Parenting disagreements
- Differences in expectations, values, or goals
- Challenges balancing work, family, and partnership
- A desire to strengthen an already solid relationship
Many couples seek therapy not only during difficult periods, but also to improve communication and deepen their connection.
How Couples Therapy Can Help
In couples therapy, partners learn to:
- Communicate more clearly and respectfully
- Understand each other’s perspectives and emotional needs
- Recognize patterns that keep conflicts stuck
- Address disagreements in more constructive ways
- Rebuild emotional safety and trust
- Strengthen their sense of partnership and teamwork
Our therapists provide a structured, supportive environment where both partners have space to feel heard and understood.
Our Approach
Couples therapy focuses on helping partners understand the emotional patterns that shape their relationship while developing practical skills for communication and conflict resolution.
Our clinicians integrate evidence-based approaches and tailor treatment to each couple’s unique experiences, strengths, and goals.
What to Expect in Your First Session
The first couples therapy session is an opportunity for your therapist to learn more about your relationship and what brings you to therapy.
During the initial session, you can expect to:
- Discuss the concerns or challenges you are currently facing
- Share a brief history of your relationship
- Identify goals for therapy and what you hope will improve
- Begin exploring patterns that may be contributing to conflict or disconnection
Your therapist will help create a space where both partners feel heard, respected, and supported as you begin the process of working toward change together.
When Couples Therapy May Not Be the Right Fit
Couples therapy is most effective when both partners are willing to participate in the process and work toward understanding one another.
There are some situations where a different approach may be recommended first, such as:
- When one partner is unwilling to participate in therapy
- When there is ongoing violence or concerns about safety in the relationship
- When one partner is seeking therapy primarily to convince the other partner to change
- When individual mental health needs require focused attention before couples work can begin
If couples therapy does not appear to be the best starting point, we can help discuss alternative options or referrals that may better support your situation.
Insurance and Couples Counseling
Inner Expansions Therapy Services is in-network with several insurance plans for individual mental health therapy. However, most insurance companies do not cover couples or marriage counseling.
Insurance plans typically require therapy to be medically necessary for the treatment of a diagnosable mental health condition for one identified client. Because couples counseling focuses on the relationship between partners rather than treating a single individual diagnosis, it is generally not eligible for insurance reimbursement.
For this reason, couples counseling sessions are typically self-pay.
If one partner is receiving individual therapy for a diagnosable condition and relationship concerns are part of that treatment, insurance coverage may sometimes apply. We are happy to discuss your situation and help determine the best option.
